Interview: Sonam Kapoor

How did you get Pankaj Kapur's Mausam?
It all began with Shahid (Kapoor) calling me up. There are three reasons why I accepted the offer: (1) I am a big fan of Pankaj Sir, (2) I loved the script and (3) I had never worked with Shahid.
Pankaj Kapur is known to be a very hard taskmaster...

Not with me. He never raised his voice at me. He knew that I prepared a lot before coming to the sets. I imbibed a lot from his narrations. But yes, every actor is different and Pankaj Sir dealt with each one of us differently. Once I met him, I knew that I wouldn't be sidelined in the film even though his son was the hero.

And did his son live up to his reputation of being a meddler?
I haven't worked with Shahid before Mausam, so I don't know how he behaves otherwise. But during the filming of Mausam, he was extremely respectful of his father and obeyed him completely. I know there were rumours of Shahid and me not getting along as well. The truth is, Shahid and I share a very good equation. We are good friends.  Just because I am not having an affair with my hero, doesn't mean I don't get along with him. Let me tell you something about him...

Go on…
He doesn't give a damn about what he wears. He is too much of a teenager who dresses up like an 18-year-old skateboarder. He can pull off just about anything without raising eyebrows. But...and it's hilarious...he is extremely worried about his hair.
But you, on the other hand, are too particular about what you wear.
I don't wear tight dresses that outline my butt. I refuse to get into body hugging tops with spandex simply because it doesn't fit my body type. I do not believe in cosmetic surgeries either. I think, every single imperfection adds to your beauty. I'd rather be imperfect than perfect. And yes, I have a certain sense of aesthetics. Think about it... I still look good in both Indian and Western wear. (And she winks)
Maybe not tight clothes, but would you ever sport a bikini?

I don't have a body like Deepika Padukone or Bipasha Basu. But if it's a beach scene, I surely can't wear a salwar kameez, right?
Speaking about Deepika, why haven't you two resolved your cold war?

She is sweet if and when we meet. However, we haven't met since we made an appearance on Karan Johar's show. We don't have time, I guess. Also, for two people to be friends, they need to think alike, isn't it?
Correct me if I'm wrong... but you are not apologetic about your remarks against Ranbir on Karan Johar's show.
No correction required. You are not wrong. Well, it was Ranbir who started it all by saying 'Sonam is not sexy'. I just shot back and said 'Ranbir is not sexy'. If a man says it, chalta hai. But when a woman says the same thing, nahi chalta hai? That's sexist! Why should I say 'sorry' to him? Just because his father made a hue and cry about it? If Ranbir apologises to me, I shall too.
So, you don't talk to Ranbir anymore...

I don't know Ranbir anymore. He is not my friend now. I did have offers to act opposite him but I turned them down. And that's simply because I thought that those roles did not suit me. If I get something nice, I'll act with him. It isn't necessary for me to be friends with all my actors.
How do you judge whether a role suits you or not?
Depends on my mood. I am eccentric.(Smiles)
Punit Malhotra?
What about him? He was my director in I Hate Luv Storys.
You are dating him...

I shall talk about my personal life if and when I decide to get married. That day is yet to come.
► I don't wear tight dresses that outline my butt. I'd rather be imperfect than perfect.

Like every man, Shahid is worried about his hair

Interview: Katrina Kaif

In Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, you look like a chirpier version of your character in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara...
I will have to say there is absolutely no similarity between the two. In MBKD, I had to completely let my hair down because my role is a lot quirkier.

She is completely mad at times. In fact, it took me a while to completely feel the madness, but I guess that's the challenge.

Imran Khan says this is your best performance ever.
I have to confess that Imran and I come from completely different schools of thought. I never thought he had a great opinion on anything. But, I think we learnt to appreciate each other's eccentricities.

You are working with Salman after four years in Ek Tha Tiger. Are you nervous about spending so much more time with him?
Well, it's been a while since we've worked together apart from a few cameos now and then. I can't deny my equation with him has changed. It does with everyone. But we are still very good friends and that's not changed.

How do you manage to maintain a friendship despite so much being written about the two of you?
You can't really be bothered by everything people write. When you are at a stage in life where you are doing well, I guess a lot will be written. Salman is at a place where he is working that much harder, so there is little time to think about much else.

Is it true that you switch off your phone and cut-off from the world every time you have to shoot with Salman?
Not at all! I have a life beyond this. I wake up, go to work, come back and hang out with friends. That won't change irrespective of whom I am working with.

Why are you a part of catfights with everyone from Anushka to Kareena?
I know scandals sell, but not at the cost of someone's work or reputation. I would be lying if I say these stories don't affect me. But I speak for myself when I say that I'm not agitated by competition. I don't know about the rest, but I know how to handle it.

So you will be comfortable working with Anushka in your next film with SRK?
Of course I will. Plus, Anushka is doing a great job and it would be great to work with her.

You will be working with SRK for the first time too. Do you know him personally?
We've met at a few award functions. That's all.

A political party wanted you to endorse their work sometime back. Would you ever think of getting into politics?
I will get involved in social work, but never in politics.

Interview: Deepika Padukone

After Love Aaj Kal you are back again with Saif Ali Khan in Aarakshan and then Cocktails. Buzz is that there is a bond developing between you two.
Love Aaj Kal is a very special film for me. Post that, Saif and I are coming together in a couple of more films. I am glad filmmakers have offered us roles together. There is certainly a comfort level with Saif as we have worked together. There is always a certain comfort level when you have already worked with an actor and I'm glad that post the success of Love Aaj Kal, people want to see us in more films together.

Talking of the comfort level between co-stars, after Om Shanti Om why hasn't Shah Rukh Khan worked with you again?
SRK said to me once at a party that the film we did was so big and special that our next film has to be as big or bigger. He'll always be my most special co-star, and when the time is right I am sure something will happen.

You've said that Ranbir Kapoor is still a close friend, but on Karan Johar's show it didn't seem so. What has changed between now and then?
Nothing has changed. We were friends then and we are friends now.

If you sign a film with Ranbir, it will automatically become one of the most anticipated films. Do you see that happening?
Why not? It should happen.

Does Sidhartha (Mallya) watch all your films?
I don't think he's watched too many Hindi films.

What makes for a romantic relationship?
First of all to love with all your heart without expecting. Also, trust, compatibility, space, patience and no ego.

Do you have a 3am friend in the industry?
I would pick up the phone and call Shahana (Goswami), Neelie, Imran and Avantika (Khan), RK (Ranbir Kapoor), Ayaan (Mukerji) and Dinesh Vijan.

Recently in Zoom's popular star survey you featured high up. Your Dum Marro Dum song, though controversial, worked big time with the youth. What connects you so strongly with them?
I owe it to my choice of films and endorsements. Also as I mentioned earlier, since childhood I have been extremely focused, ambitious and sure of what I want to do. Today's youth is also focused and ambitious, so I guess they feel a connect in that sense.

Actresses are either beautiful or they are hot. You are one of the rare ones who is often referred to as both. What do you think helps more: being beautiful or hot ?
Being hot or beautiful is the way you feel at a given point of time, but what is more important is to be a good human. That's what people remember you for. That's what lasts.

You are 25 and have just bought one of the most expensive homes in the city. How does it feel to have achieved this at such a young age?
I do feel a small sense of achievement because I have worked hard for it.
